When the “New Tappan Zee Bridge” was proposed at the whopping $3.9 Billion tax payer dollars and a toll price hike that would increase the bicycle business; no one ever uttered the insult to injury to come by telling us it was going to be an in your face monument to Andy’s political ego.
Most distasteful was the sneaky way they did it, by an insidious collusion with the State Assembly without objection or media scrutiny. The very same State Assembly who can barely agree about what time is on a wall clock were in full agreement over this insult to the people who have to pay for it at every crossing.
By what measure, standard, or legacy does the current Governor deem worthy that his progenitor should be so honored with a $3.9 Billion dollar name plate affixed to it at taxpayer and working commuter expense?
When President Donald J. Trump places his name as a commercial brand on buildings, hotels, and golf courses; he earned the right to do so because he built it and paid for it with his own money at risk.
So, why not let us here in Rockland and Westchester County have some kind of input to the name if they were going to arbitrarily re-name it without notice.
Instead, this editorial opinion page will call it exactly what it is and what it will be known as for generations yet to come: ” The My Daddy’s Bridge: A monument to political ego and what appears to be out of control, psychotic, self absorbed narcissism.
This bridge should be an engineering technical marvel and the project should have been a job creator, not an overpriced tax burden that failed to generate a hiccup in lowering the unemployment numbers or improving the economy in the Hudson Valley.
There was no renaming commission panel of historians and non-politicians who could have infused the revolutionary historical significance this bridge could have come to represent for future generations as a reminder of our rebel- nation origins. No wisdom, no prudence, no deep thought, imagination or intellectuality, nor even parliamentary debate was expended along with that choking $3.9 Billion. This was the best they could come up with.
“The My Daddy’s Bridge” is what our State Assembly unilaterally deemed it should be, will be, and that is that. Now shut up and cough up the money for it. Our founding revolutionaries would be shooting by now. Think about that each time you pay the toll crossing “The My-Daddy’s Bridge”.
